What is Community Acupuncture?
Currently in the United States, acupuncture is viewed more or less as a “luxury” treatment, akin to a spa treatment or massage. This is understandable, given the way acupuncture is practiced here. Sessions are generally scheduled well in advance and conducted one on one, in a private room. They’re also frequently quite expensive–anywhere from $75 to $150 and up for a single session. Acupuncture is most successful when it is performed with some level of frequency until symptoms have resolved and underlying issues have been healed, but few Americans can afford such courses of treatment at these prices.
The result of all this is that treatment is often inaccessible to people who need it the most. Community acupuncture is a nationwide movement to create access to acupuncture in this country by removing the barrier of cost.
Unlike the United States, acupuncture in China is commonly performed in a group setting; following that model, Community Acupuncture clinics offer treatment in a group setting at a low cost. In our clinic, comfortable recliners are grouped together in a large, quiet soothing space.
Treating patients in a community setting has many benefits: it’s easy for friends and family members to come in for treatment together; many patients find it comforting; and a collective energetic field becomes established which actually makes individual treatments more powerful. We use points on the scalp and below the elbows and knees to treat the entire body, so there’s no need to undress – just remove your shoes and roll up your pants and sleeves. And yes, we can even address your back pain by treating your wrists. Let us know how long you want to stay –we recommend a minimum of 30 minutes and you can stay for up to one hour. Many people fall asleep, and wake feeling refreshed.
